This paper addresses questions raised by the assassination of Aslan Maskhadov, former President of Chechnya, in March 2005. The author discusses the events that led to this assassination as well as its consequences and international reactions to Russia’s Chechnya policy. He concludes that increasing violence, blood revenge and interclan conflict are likely, particularly as there are growing signs that Chechnya is too small for both Alu Alkhanov, the Chechen president, and Ramzan Kadyrov, the first deputy prime minister.
