This report analyzes two Russian military operations in the course of the Second Chechen War which have caused numerous casualties among Russian troops while their circumstances have not been fully and publicly investigated. The author traces the ambush of Sergiyev Posad Omon and the battle in Ulus-Kert. He concludes that although not all actions can be explained, a significant part of the casualties resulted from incompetence and irresponsibility within the federal forces command.
