After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the United States quickly recognized the independence of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. Since then, Washington has worked tirelessly to end these states’ dependence on Russia. Depending on the country, these efforts have specifically included democratization (Armenia), political normalization with the West (Georgia), and energy development (Azerbaijan).
