This paper illustrates the need for reform of India's judicial system, focusing on its performance and the backlog problem. It provides statistical information that outlines the nature of the backlog problem, presents existing attempts to reduce pendency and explores the question of information and communication technology usage. Subsequently, it looks at the issues of criminal justice and police reform and identifies broad directions for justice reform. The author points to the need to increase the number of India's judges and courts, strengthen financial autonomy and implement procedural improvements.
