This paper evaluates the situation and the functioning of the Finnish-Russian border. Due to its relevance the authors focus on the Vaalimaa border crossing point, the busiest crossing on this frontier. The methodology includes the observation and interviewing of people related to border work in numerous ways, as well as legislative analysis and data collection. The authors explain why the border is unstable and could present a EU-Russian normative divide, and recommend measures to prevent the marginalization of the border.
