This bulletin analyzes the issues surrounding the 18 February 2008 elections in Pakistan. The author argues that these elections have received more international attention than any hitherto because of Pakistan's support for US-led operations in Afghanistan against al-Qaida and the Taliban; concerns over Pakistan's nuclear weapons falling into the hands of extremist Islamist groups; and the assassination of former Prime Minister and Leader of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Benazir Bhutto.
