This paper covers the topics that were discussed and the conclusions that were drawn at the 2016 Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG), which was established by the UN General Assembly to help bring nuclear disarmament negotiations forward. More specifically, the text’s author lays out 1) the different approaches to nuclear disarmament that are possible; 2) the OEWG’s terms of reference; and 3) the impact the Working Group has had thus far. In the case of the latest meeting, the outcomes could be described as modest, but they were significant relative to other multilateral disarmament forums.
