This paper considers environmental conditions in Russia and argues it inherited a grave environmental legacy from the Soviet Union. Spending on environmental protection and clean-up is low, and little awareness exists among the population on the deleterious effects of environmental pollution. Moreover, the author notes that because of security concerns the Russian state often hampers clean-up efforts, especially if the projects have international connections or are in military and nuclear facilities.
