This paper investigates Sino-Russian relations since the 1800's, arguing their relationship is the story of cyclical swings between periods of antagonism and periods of rapprochement. The author argues China and Russia are collaborating in the areas of political and military technology, yet have failed to reinforce this trend by promoting broad economic cooperation. A significant potential strain on Sino-Russian bilateral relations may be the economic absorption of Asiatic Russia by China. The paper additionally considers the role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Sino-Russian relations.
