This paper examines the evolution of a demographic crisis in Russia. It notes that Russia's population is declining at an annual rate of hundreds of thousands of people, implying serious consequences for the viability of the Russian state. Poverty, an AIDS epidemic, and the profusion of vices, like smoking and alcoholism, all contribute. The author argues there is no quick fix. Reversing the trend may require significant changes to the political and social fabric of Russia.
