This paper investigates pay and allowances for service members of the Russian armed forces. It notes that the conventional belief in the West that pay grades in the Russian armed forces are disastrously inadequate is misconstrued. This is because pay for all service members is made up of two parallel basic components, plus a large number of allowances, extras and increments. The author argues therefore that it is almost always misleading to generalize about Russian military pay.
