This paper examines Russia's ambitions to expand its claim in the Arctic. The authors note that the belief that the North Pole region contains large quantities of oil and gas is one of the major forces driving Russian policy. Canada, the US and Denmark are likely to challenge Russia's claims. The authors discuss armed action by NATO to contest Russia’s Arctic claims as a serious possibility.
