This publication discusses the strategic importance of Russia’s far eastern region and its potential to shape the geo-political landscape in the Asia Pacific. The author argues that policymakers in Moscow recognize the need to develop the area’s logistic and communication infrastructure in order to maximize its military, political and economic influence. The paper concludes that depopulation and a lack of investment have made matters worse than during the Soviet period and without a focused program of state support the far eastern region’s potential will not be realized.
