This publication examines the impact for Russia of the increased US presence in Central Asia in response to the 11 September 2001 attacks. The author argues that although Moscow's military leadership is still accustom to thinking in Cold War terms, there is no zero sum game going on in Central Asia. He concludes that by not opposing the US, President Vladimir Putin has probably done the best thing he could to preserve Russia's influence in Central Asia.
