This publication discusses Russian President Vladimir Putin's interpretation of multi-polarity, its relationship with former Soviet states and his policy toward the US. The author argues that since 1991 Russia has overcome Cold War-era confrontation and antagonism with the West, favoring a policy of multi-polarity over integration as the best strategy to regain great power status. The paper concludes that the attacks of 11 September 2001 appear to have entirely revalidated Russia's pursuit of a multi-polar world.
