This publication examines Russian attitudes towards Islam, the Taliban and its relations with other Muslim states. The author argues that Russia's fear of a coordinated Islamic international terrorist threat from a single source is exaggerated. The publication concludes that Russian perceptions of Islamic extremism as an internationally coherent movement are similar to western perceptions of international communism during the Cold War. The author suggests that such perceptions grossly oversimplify the reality.
