This paper examines the security environment in Afghanistan, assesses the programs put in place to address these threats, identifies existing gaps and offers possible solutions. It reviews some of the most important security programs, especially ones that concentrate on building Afghan capacity, and focuses on US assistance. The authors argue that more than seven years after US forces entered Afghanistan, important gains made in bringing stability and democracy to Afghanistan are imperiled.
