This publication examines the growth and development of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) which took over many of the functions of the KGB after Soviet disintegration. The author argues that terminology used by the SVR may have changed but the US still is and will remain their object of interest. The author concludes that human intelligence gathering has historically been Russia's strong point and that the next step of NATO enlargement will make the SVR more active in NATO and its candidate countries.
