This publication discusses NATO and EU relations with Russia and the Ukraine and speculates as to the direction Russia takes under President Vladimir Putin. The author argues that the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) can act to strengthen NATO and EU influence over Russia and Ukraine. The publication concludes that Russia uses the supply of oil to Ukraine as a coercive tool against it and that Russia will seek to exploit differences between the EU and NATO in order to gain political and diplomatic advantage.
