This publication discusses the potential impact of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's accession to the presidency. The author argues that Putin is the preferred choice for current President Boris Yeltsin to save him from legal prosecution and charges of corruption by his political opponents. The publication concludes that Putin intends to strengthen the power of the state but excludes the possibility of a return to communism; he wants to integrate the Russian economy into the world economic structures and stresses the necessity of foreign investment.
