This paper examines the role Thailand's former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra plays in Thai politics. To this end, the author recalls how Thaksin came to power after the economic crisis the country experienced in 1997. He then goes on to outline his rise as a politician as well as his fall in the aftermath of the country's political crisis that started in 2005.
