This paper explores the relationship between democracy and elections in Southern African Development Community (SADC) states. It notes that although most have embraced liberal democracy, in practice, they implement electoral practices that are essentially a narrower form of liberal democracy. The paper highlights the volatility of electoral democracy in the SADC region and outlines obstacles hampering the institutionalization of liberal democracy.
