This paper explores the implications of the 2005 Tanzanian general elections. It notes that the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party dominates the Tanzanian political scene; it nevertheless opted to adopt a multiparty political system beginning in July 1992. The author argues that the December 2005 election results afford President Jakaya Kikwete’s regime the opportunity to play an increasingly important role in regional politics and security.
