This paper assess the impact of car theft crime prevention programs in South Africa. It argues that improvements in car security and policing, the spread of tracking technology, as well as improvements in the management of systems for the registration and re-registration of ownership have, in effect, led to a form of displacement. Would-be car thieves are turning their energies to other crimes. The statistical analysis suggests that the greater the decline in car theft in a given station area, the greater the increase in aggravated robberies.
