This paper assesses African perspectives on and attitudes toward UN Security Council Resolution 1540. Resolution 1540 prohibits states from providing any form of support to non-state actors attempting to acquire or produce a weapon of mass destruction (WMD). The paper examines the origins of Resolution 1540 and the implications it holds for countries. Thereafter, it surveys the attitudes of African countries toward the resolution and nonproliferation issues in general. The final part considers possible benefits for African countries in advancing the implementation of Resolution 1540.
