This paper examines environmental damage caused by the illicit abalone trade in South Africa. It recounts the rapid rise of the illicit abalone trade during the 1990s and describes various attempts to curb it. It also discusses attempts at intervention initially written off as infeasible, but likely re-applicable with a bit of faith.
