This paper assesses the role of the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) in protecting civilians. It discusses dynamics surrounding UNMIL's broad mandate, deployment and the implementation of critical peacekeeping and peacebuilding tasks, notably disarmament, demobilization, rehabilitation and reintegration (DDRR), security sector reform, issues of human rights and the rule of law and transitional justice. The author argues that these dynamics are analyzed to highlight their crucial importance to the overall peace process in general and the protection of civilians in particular.
