This paper examines the formation of Madagascar's Third Republic in 1992 using an historical perspective and considers the events leading up to the political crisis of 2002. It delves into the person of President Marc Ravalomanana, his nationalistic views and their importance, his relationship with the legislature and the judiciary, and his performance. It concludes by discussing emerging challenges to his administration.
