This paper explores conflict dynamics in North and South Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). It discuss the links between the military campaign led by former Rassemblement Congolais pour la Démocratie (RCD) general Laurent Nkunda and other civilian and military leaders in the region. It also address the impact conflict has had on relations between key ethnic groups in the region and considers the extent to which various state and non-state actors manipulate and politicize outcomes.
