This paper explores the link between terrorism and organized crime in southern Africa. It considers seven case studies, including among others, the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi; the 2002 suicide bomb attack on the Israeli-owned Paradise Hotel in Kikambala, north of Mombassa, Kenya; the People against Gangsterism and Drugs (PAGAD) in South Africa; Hizbollah in Mauritius; and Boeremag in South Africa. The author concludes that while proven linkages elsewhere in the world (FARC, IRA, etc) suggest there is much to gain from a close symbiotic linkage between terrorists and organized criminals, southern Africa does not reflect this reality.
