This brief assesses the mandates of the three regional political offices the UN has established in West and Central Africa, and in Central Asia. The text’s authors conclude that the offices continue to focus too much on the immediate causes of conflict rather than reinforcing broader bases for peace. In response, they recommend four ways to strengthen the mandates’ promotion of sustainable peace.
