This paper walks through the complex and underlying dynamics of modern history, focusing specifically on the rising popularity of statehood and nationalism and how these concepts have impacted the Eastern Hemisphere’s broad historical narrative. More specifically, the text’s author segments modern history into four distinct phases and argues that 1) advances in transportation and communications served as consistent catalysts for transitional change, and 2) states and supra-state entities have largely failed to address a variety of socio-political issues over time. As a result, we’ve recently seen a rising number of local populations searching for alternative forms of sub-state and cross-border self-determination.
