This report outlines that in 2019, 149 suicide bombings were carried out in 24 countries by 236 suicide bombers. In these bombings, 1850 people were killed and 3660 wounded. The number of bombings was substantially lower than the 2018 figure and is in keeping with an ongoing decline witnessed in recent years. The text’s authors suggest that the decline in 2019 is possibly attributable to the military defeat of the Islamic State. However, they warn that suicide bombings remain an effective tactic for terrorist groups and that a regrouping of jihadist forces could lead to an increase in such bombings.
