After more than thirteen years, the UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) completed its mandate on 30 June 2017. This report provides a historical account of the various phases of the crisis in Côte d’Ivoire as well as how the UNOCI and the UN Security Council (UNSC) responded to them. Based on this assessment, the text’s author also highlights lessons learned for other peacekeeping missions related to 1) the consent of the host state; 2) potential heavy involvement of a UNSC permanent member in a country; 3) election certification mandates, and more.
