This paper examines Turkey’s failed coup d’etat within the broader context of politics in the western part of the Muslim world – i.e., the areas that stretch from Morocco to Bangladesh. After highlighting the relative political backwardness of the Muslim world and the particulars of the attempted coup, the text’s author 1) describes the potential democratic benefits of the latter for the Muslim world; 2) looks at military interventions in Pakistan and what its uniformed members have learned from their experiences; and 3) discusses how political developments India have provided a template for the subcontinent’s Muslim majority areas to follow.
