This paper contends that the globe’s health architecture is increasingly under strain. Pandemics and epidemics have occurred at an unprecedented rate in recent years, and the Ebola crisis in particular revealed serious flaws in system’s capability to prevent and respond to such crises. So how should the multilateral system, anchored in the UN, respond? The text’s authors recommend this should involve 1) the reaffirmation of the centrality of the World Health Organization (WHO); 2) the establishment of improved frameworks for accountability and the implementation of international health regulations; 3) highlighting how states are primarily responsible for preparing for epidemics, and more.
