This publication addresses the political system in Zanzibar, Tanzania, prior to the semi-autonomous archipelago’s 2020 elections. The text’s authors argue that the 2020 election could be especially hard fought as the parties refuse to enter into dialogue due to ill-will inspired partly by the annulment of the 2015 vote. Further, as the ruling party has pushed through rules in its favor, the 2020 vote could turn violent. In response, the authors argue the islands’ politicians should make it a matter of urgency to meet to discuss levelling the playing field and lowering the risk of clashes.
