What impact will the Trump administration’s decision to pull the US out of the Paris Agreement have on US interests? To answer this question, this paper reviews if this decision 1) will lead to the fragmentation of the Paris Agreement; 2) will harm US businesses; 3) will enable China to increase its global status at the expense of the US; and 4) reflects a hardening of the view in the Trump administration that climate change is a ‘hoax.’ The authors also provide recommendations on how the US could still formulate an effective climate policy after it leaves the Paris Agreement.
