This paper presents preliminary findings on the role of weapon and ammunition management (WAM) in stabilization and security transition settings. More specifically, it highlights observations from a series of national consultative assessments on WAM frameworks, with particular lessons drawn from four countries in Africa—the Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, the Niger and Somalia. Further, the text’s authors focus on three key conflict drivers in which WAM plays a critical preventive role, namely: 1) destabilizing transfers of arms and ammunition to fragile contexts; 2) diversions from national stockpiles to unauthorized end-users, and 3) illegal trafficking, possession and misuse of weapons and ammunition.
