This study explores the relationship between nuclear weapons and gender. It specifically argues that adopting a gender perspective in this domain will help us better understand 1) the impact of nuclear weapons; 2) the debates surrounding these weapons; and 3) the actors involved in nuclear disarmament. In fact, it is possible that the failure to apply a gender perspective in disarmament may be contributing to the current lack of progress in the field and may help explain why other efforts to tackle global problems – such as the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals – are so often ignored in nuclear-centered discourses.
