This publication argues that the deteriorating relationship between Saudi Arabia and Iran has brought forth a new cold war in the Middle East, and that the two states’ diverging interests are making it difficult for Pakistan to avoid choosing sides. In response, the text’s author examines 1) Pakistan’s relationship with Saudi Arabia; 2) Pakistan-Iran relations; 3) two case studies of how Pakistan responded to tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran in the past, and 4) the implications of Pakistan’s interest in hedging between Iran and Saudi Arabia for the US.
