This analysis assesses the pluses and minuses of economic migration into Australia and concludes that Canberra has largely managed to deal with this problem successfully. The benefits of this type of immigration are that skilled workers 1) offset the problems created by an ageing population; 2) improve labor productivity; and 3) address extant regional and industrial needs. However, on the debit side, it’s obvious that the Australian government must pursue additional reforms to address the treatment of temporary immigrants and to maintain public support for economic migration.
