This Publication offers insights into Myanmar’s role within a changing regional drug market. According to the author, rising demand has transformed the country into the prime producer of synthetic drugs. Production of and trade in narcotics in Myanmar registers continuous growth in spite of 1) an overall decrease in poppy production and 2) the growing success of police personnel in seizing contraband. A new drug control policy notwithstanding, the author suggests that controlling the spiraling trade will be difficult unless regional governments establish a cooperative mechanism.
