This publication analyzes how, when and why UN missions engage with non-state armed groups (NSAGs) in order to enhance the protection of civilians (POC). More specifically, it 1) provides an overview of strategies of engagement, 2) identifies the risks of working with NSAGs and how POC mandates can help missions navigate these risks, 3) outlines the advantages of engaging with NSAGs, and more. The publication bases its findings on the UN missions in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), Mali (MINUSMA), the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), and Afghanistan (UNAMA).
