This analysis argues that the international protection regime is failing refugees and states alike, and that Australia has a responsibility to address the problem by helping to reform the regime. More specifically, the text’s author argues that Canberra should 1) set domestic standards that respond fairly but effectively to asylum seekers and environmentally-driven migration; 2) burnish its leadership credentials at the regional level; and 3) champion new global approaches to dealing with migrants and refugees, and thereby supplant a complacent existing regime.
