This edited collection examines the role of the United Nations in relation to the principle of self-determination. To do so, the chapters examine what role the UN plays in self-determination through a number of case studies. More specifically, these cases address self-determination in South Sudan and East Timor following their independence; the UN and indigenous peoples’ self-determination; self-determination after intrastate conflict; the Cyprus conflict; the right to secede in cases of failed states; Western Sahara and Palestine’s efforts to pursue self-determination through the UN; UN involvement in the Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan; and micro-states and the UN.
