This publication analyzes the US’s strategy towards the Syrian crisis. The text’s author argues 1) that because the US maintains a military presence in the only two areas in Syria that remain outside of the Assad regime’s control, Washington has a narrow window to change the closing trajectory of the conflict; 2) the next phases of the conflict are now directly connected to what the US does on the ground, and whether it effectively uses its presence to advance its larger diplomatic and political aims; 3) with the Assad regime’s recent advances, conditions on the ground now demand clarity from the Trump administration regarding its aims and priorities in Syria; and more.
