This paper explains how Egypt’s distant support of the failed July 2016 military coup in Turkey has led to a freezing of relations between the two countries, which had been moving towards greater economic and political cooperation. The text also discusses how the coup attempt has led some in Egypt to examine more closely the struggle between Islamists and the military in their own country. Finally, the text’s authors contend that although a medium- to long-term rapprochement between both countries is probable, we shouldn’t expect to see a resolution to the present freeze in Turkish-Egyptian relations for quite a while.
