This paper looks at how Australia and New Zealand are a microcosm of the balance of power in the larger Asia-Pacific region. Key points include 1) both countries are trying to carefully navigate a path between the US and China; 2) the present conservative Australian government continues to be strongly allied with the US politically; 3) New Zealand’s coalition is still defining its foreign policy, but an indicator of its future direction might be found in the country’s vote for the UN resolution which criticized the US’ decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, and more.
