This report examines Germany’s ongoing attempts to transform its gas-based energy sector, possibly by replacing pipeline gas with imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) and expanding the domestic production of biogas and syngas. More specifically, the text’s author 1) analyzes the role natural gas does play in Berlin’s energy transformation strategy; 2) looks at Germany’s relations with its current gas suppliers, particularly Russia; and 3) discusses alternative energy sources that Germany might pursue, including shale gas extraction, biogas and the innovative power-to-gas technology.
